WEDDING | THE DRESS CODES

Knowing what to wear to a wedding can be slightly daunting. Formal, cocktail, black-tie, location, casual, semi-formal...the list goes on.

Here is our guide to deciphering some trending dress codes so you can be the picture perfect guest.

BLACK TIE

Black tie is the most common dress code you'll find, however this dress code has very much evolved over time.

Although evening gowns are standard fare for black tie weddings, you can get away with a formal cocktail dress (we advise a longer midi-maxi length) or even an elegant suit.

Our advice - stick to floor length or midi and opt for something unusual like our La Lune Blazer & Tuxedo Trouser. Always avoid white and ivory.

COLOUR CODE

A lot of brides these days are opting for a non-traditional wedding dress in a statement colour for a certain "insta-worthy" aesthetic.

In situations like these, you'll find a colour code assigned to your wedding invitation and the most common is usually all white. This is to ensure the bride stands out in any photo and at any point throughout the evening.

Our advice - stick to something simple however play with luxurious fabrics. A midi length is preferred however if you opt for a mini, make sure you have a full sleeve and conservative neckline.

FORMAL

A formal dress code indicates a slightly less dressed up version of black tie. Technically there's not much difference between 'formal' and 'black tie' for women, for men however a tuxedo is no longer required.

Our advice - have a bit more fun here. Add a statement print or bold colour. Keep the length midi or floor length. As always, avoid white and ivory, however you can incorporate champagne into your colour mix or a white base for printed designs.

COCKTAIL

Cocktail is a popular choice amongst couples these days and allows a more relaxed approach to wedding dressing.

Still elegant and sophisticated, here you can play with hem lengths or interesting and plunging necklines.

Our advice - stick to sophisticated silhouettes and fabrics, however opt for a mini or midi length. Always ensure if the neckline is plunging, your hemline is longer.

TROPICAL / DESTINATION

Usually destination weddings take place in Summer and therefore can be very hot and humid affairs. Unless the invitation specifically reads black tie, you can assume this is a less formal event and dress accordingly (and for the weather!)

Our advice - play with length and show some skin! Shorter styles are much more acceptable within this style of wedding. Choose fabrics that are breathable like linens, cottons or floaty silks. Avoid white and ivory, however you can skew to champagne and gold colours here as they compliment sun-kissed skin.
