Briar and I met in 2016, in a small New Zealand town called Palmerston North. I’d just begun my university studies in science, and Briar was in her first year of nursing. We actually met at the local mall, “the Plaza”, when I approached her and asked where she’d bought her leather jacket; I was on the hunt for the perfect leather myself. This somehow evolved into a full on conversation, where we realized we had mutual friends and ended up exchanging socials. It was very wholesome, and totally innocent!
Five years later, B proposed in the most beautiful little bay, on the East Cape of New Zealand. We watched an incredible sunset with a Mediterranean platter, champagne, candles, Sam Cooke and Van Morrison playing. B asked me to marry her just as the sun disappeared.

We’d previously spent time in Italy together, and both absolutely adore the country. We went back and forth with the idea of a big wedding at home versus the romance of eloping in Italy, and the latter won! My ma is a wedding celebrant, and we had a special ceremony where we legally got married with our close family the weekend before we left for Europe. We may yet arrange a big celebration/belated reception, but it felt so very special and intimate to just be the two of us on the day.
The venue we chose was Villa Monastero on Lake Como. It was exquisite and so elegant; everything we’d imagined. We had a beautiful cellist, Chiara, come and play a few songs through the ceremony, which was taken by the wonderful Sonia, a Lake Como local celebrant! Briar and I shared our first dance to Chiara’s version of ‘At Last’ by Etta James. We had a single bouquet of long-stemmed white roses, tied with a silk ribbon.
We were unbelievably lucky to have Haute photographing us. They made us feel so comfortable, and we’re in love with how they captured the day.
After the ceremony, we took a classic Venetian boat out for sunset, the light and colours on the mountains and lake were so dreamy. It honestly didn’t feel real. We ended the ride by jumping off the back of the boat into the lake… in our dresses! A drown the gown I suppose, but perhaps less traditional. To finish our day, Briar and I arranged a private chef to come to our accommodation. We set up a table for two outside, with spectacular views of the lake, and enjoyed the best and happiest meal of our lives. Thank you so much chef Alessandro for this - you helped make our evening perfect (not to mention the divine homemade limoncello wedding gift!)

We wanted our dresses to be elegant and timeless. It was important to us that they were cohesive and complemented each other. Our mood board was classic and romantic; something to reflect the beauty of Lake Como. Briar wanted something a little whimsical, preferably with a sleeve moment, whereas I was after a classic, sleek shape. When we saw the Shona Joy La Lune bridal collection we fell in love with the dresses. The colours were perfect and the fabric draped so gorgeously! We thought our dress hunt journey was going to be long and winding, but we bought the first dresses we tried on!
