Our Philosophy

Our commitment is to develop well-crafted and timeless pieces. Designed to celebrate life in and treasures for years to come.

Second Nature is built on the foundations of People, Product, and Planet. Each of these pillars is carefully laced with our core purpose: empower women, protect our oceans, and conserve nature.

We’re committed to minimising our impact and contributing positively to people and the planet. To us, it's Second Nature.

People

We are a proud Australian owned and female founded business. We consider the prosperity of our people an important benchmark for a resilient and healthy planet.

Our People impact pillar guides the efforts that we are taking as a business, to prioritise the wellbeing of our team, both internal and external, as well as to ensure that women’s empowerment and inclusion are key focuses.

We’re working closely with our value-chain to enhance our ethical sourcing and ensure that our factories are operating in line with our Code of Conduct (CoC) and relevant social standards. Our partnerships have been designed to be aligned to organisations that are on the ground driving change – particularly those affecting women, children and the environment.

i=Change

We've partnered with i=Change with a committed donation of $1 for every order placed, to a life changing project of your choice. We feel so fortunate to be in a position to raise awareness to causes we feel connected to and are so excited to be ale to use our platform to encourage continual support toward these incredible projects.

The Encoreship is a first-of-its-kind initiative providing employment opportunities to women who are facing challenges re-entering the workforce after an extended period away.

Shona Joy is proud to have participated with The Encoreship with our first placement in 2022 and are committed to partnering with the program.

In Australia, workforce participation for women is 9.5% behind men (ABS, 2020), with the median superannuation balance for women being 22% lower than men at retirement (WGEA, 2020) and managers being almost twice as likely to be men than women (ABS,2020).

Last year, 61% of job losses in Australia (Feb-Oct 2021) were experienced by women, and 72% of women felt they needed to up-skill before they could re-enter the workforce (Anthil, 2016).

Dress for Success

Each year, 100,000 women in NSW along struggle to find a job - putting themselves and their family at risk. Dress for Success Sydney is a charity that has brought hope to more than 15,000 of these disadvantaged women - transforming their lives by offering the skills and confidence they need to secure work and gain financial independence.

For the past two years, Shona Joy has partnered with Dress for Success - as part of our mission to do our part in ensuring every woman has the same opportunity to feel independent and empowered. We have proudly donated our dresses to both the Sydney and Illawarra branches, supported the organisations through fundraising and donations and have dressed young women attending their school formals or graduation dances, who couldn't have otherwise afforded to attend.

All mothers and their children deserve access to basic healthcare and the chance for their families to get ahead. SurfAid is a not for profit organisation committed to improving the health and wellbeing of mothers and children living in isolated regions, by enabling local people to develop and apply their own development ideas rather than simply delivering our own.

The Shona Joy X Surfaid Capsule Collection was designed to support the lives of women and children in remote areas and isolated villages where the maternal and child mortality rates are some of the highest in the world. $10 for every product sold from the collection was donated to SurfAid. Shona Joy remains committed to supporting the incredible work of SurfAid’s Women & Children Program in order to provide families the best chance of getting ahead by providing access to healthcare, clean water and sanitation and improved nutrition.

GOTS ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is grown through chemical-free farming practices meaning that pesticide runoff and the contamination associated with it are avoided, and allowing growers to enrich the land, creating healthy, carbon-rich soils which require less water.

Our Organic Cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) to ensure best practices are maintained from seed to final product.

LENZING™ ECOVERO™

Derived from certified renewable wood sources using an eco-responsible production process by meeting high environmental standards, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibres are tailored to a sustainable lifestyle.

Contributing to a cleaner environment, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose fibres omit 50% less greenhouse gas emissions and utilise less water than conventional viscose.

RECYCLED POLYESTER

A more responsible alternative to conventional polyester, recycled polyester is mainly made from PET plastic bottles, but other post-consumer plastics such as ocean waste, discarded polyester textiles, or from pre-consumer waste such as fabric scraps can also be utilised.

Recycled polyester gives a second life to materials that would otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean, and production of recycled polyester also generates less energy and fewer CO2 emissions which helps promote our commitment towards becoming a more responsible and circular brand.

ECONYL® REGENERATED NYLON

ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon is made from pre and post consumer nylon waste, such as fishing nets and industrial plastic, which would otherwise pollute our Earth.

Our swimwear has been designed using Global Recycle Standard (GRS) Certified ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon, eliminating the need for new resources to be used in order to produce these garments.

Planet

As an Australian brand, our connection to nature inspires us daily and we are committed to respecting, protecting and nurturing the planet.

Our objective is to consider our impact on the natural resources our planet so generously provides, with a focus on water and biodiversity conservation. and building resilient communities.

We have recently developed our packaging policy in order to take the most circular and responsible approach to our portfolio and are currently in a transitory phase.

With a deep connection to the ocean, we are committed to ensuring that our packaging is minimal, made using renewable and non-toxic resources and is made from certified recycled materials, reusable or recyclable.

We are working to eliminate plastic from our packaging portfolio and to be 100% reusable and recyclable.

Responsible Packaging

Minimising Our Footprint

Today, we are proud to have introduced initiatives to reduce our waste within our HQ and Warehouse including a reusable coffee cup policy, recyclable ink cartridges and general recycling and waste management.

Alongside this, we are using renewable energy in both our HQ and Warehouse.

Seabin Project is responsible for collecting trash, oil, fuel and detergents from our oceans.

There are over 850 Seabins installed globally and their technology has collected 1.8 million kilos of garbage and plastics from our oceans to date.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Seabin moves up and down with the range of the tide collecting all floating rubbish.

Water is pulled in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin, with a submersible water pump capable of displacing 25.000 litres per hour. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag.

The Seabin can catch an estimated 3.9kgs of floating debris per day or 1.4 tons per year (depending on weather and debris volumes) including micro plastics down to 2mm small.

A challenge Seabin Project continues to face is a lack of volunteers.

As part of our ongoing partnership our team have loved volunteering their time to help Seabin with servicing and Data Collection.

To volunteer your time or make a donation we encourage you to visit their website.
